I'm a researcher investigating the relationship between subjectivity and the material sites that condition its emergence. Building on the philosophy of Alain Badiou, I argue that we have lost touch with the notion of “truth”: an unpredictable event that requires subjectivity in order to be brought into the realm of meaning and knowledge. In its place, we increasingly trust technological systems to give rise to new futures, even though they, for now, lack the ability to recognise events, resulting in a pathological temporality that François Hartog calls presentism. My work seeks to redraw the boundaries between materialism, technology, and subjectivity, so that we can once again think futures that can be dialectically brought forth from material histories.
