I’m a researcher investigating the relationship between subjectivity and its necessary conditioning by material sites that are always inherently political. Building on the philosophy of Alain Badiou, I argue that we have lost touch with a notion of “truth” that is non-derivable from the sites that produce it: a truth that requires subjectivity in order to be converted into meaning and knowledge. In its place, we increasingly trust that technological automation alone will give rise to new futures, resulting in a pathological temporality that François Hartog calls presentism. My work seeks to re-establish the connection between materialism, technology and subjectivity, so that we can once again think futures that can be dialectically brought forth from material histories.
